What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, progressively worsening your vision. This disease can cause severe, irreversible vision loss if left untreated. Many people experience little to no glaucoma symptoms until their vision is affected, making early diagnosis crucial for treating this disease.
A common sign for many but not all forms of glaucoma is an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). The treatment you receive may depend on the form of glaucoma you have.
Common types of glaucoma include:
- Primary open-angle glaucoma: One of the most common forms of this disease, open-angle glaucoma causes IOP to rise because fluid cannot drain from the eye effectively
- Angle-closure glaucoma: Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when pressure suddenly rises due to the sudden blockage of the drainage canals, causing the aqueous fluid to become trapped—this disease can lead to sudden vision loss & requires immediate attention
- Normal-tension glaucoma: Normal-tension glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve without raising eye pressure—doctors are unsure of why this happens

- Laser trabeculoplasty: Laser trabeculoplasty uses a focused laser beam to treat the drainage angle within the eye to improve the flow of aqueous fluid, helping lower IOP for those with primary open-angle glaucoma
- Laser iridotomy: Laser iridotomy is ideal for patients with closed-angle glaucoma—it involves using a laser to create a small hole in the iris to open the drainage angle & allow more fluid to flow
- Medications: Eye drops & oral medications may be prescribed to help lower your eye pressure
- Trabectome: Trabectome is a surgery used for open-angle glaucoma—it features a probe-like device that enters the eye to emit thermal energy, removing the covering of the drainage angle to allow greater fluid flow
- Kahook Dual Blade: The Kahook Dual Blade is surgery for open-angle glaucoma, featuring the use of incisions to remove a section of tissue in the trabecular meshwork to increase aqueous fluid flow
- Micro invasive glaucoma surgery with cataract surgery: Micro invasive glaucoma surgery occurs after the completion of cataract surgery, involving the placement of a microstent to open the eye’s drainage system to lower IOP
- Trabeculectomy: Trabeculectomy is a common surgery used to lower IOP through the creation of an opening in the white of the eye, helping fluid drain into a small reservoir under the eye’s surface
- Ex-PRESS glaucoma shunt: The Ex-PRESS glaucoma shunt procedure involves placing a tiny filtration device called a shunt into the eye to reroute fluid from the eye, lowering IOP
- Glaucoma drainage devices: A glaucoma drainage device is a tube shunt that helps reroute excess aqueous fluid from the eye into an exterior reservoir to lower eye pressure
